This song gives its name to the British band Pink Floyd’s ninth studio album (1975).  Within a paused melody, the lyrics talk about absence and the mental struggles of former band member Syd Barrett. Initially the song received diverse reviews, but the album “Wish You Were Here” occupies nº209 on the list of the 500 best albums in history, complied by Rolling Stone magazine.

This song was written by The Thin White Duke as the odyssey of Major Tom’s. The song tells the story of how the astronaut begins his journey to space, from the countdown up until the ship leaves Earth. According to Bowie himself, this song reflects space exploration as an open world, a sensation of being constantly floating due to the absence of gravity.
